In this episode of Colivers Club, we sit down with Theo Villard, a self-proclaimed minimalist nomad who once counted his entire inventory of possessions (99 items!), built a startup, took a multi-year sabbatical, and even tried to launch a crypto-powered coliving. Oh, and he has very strong opinions about reinventing toilets.
💼 From Burnout to Sabbaticals
Theo shares his journey from running a crypto startup to hitting a wall and deciding to take time off. What was meant to be a one-year break turned into a three-year deep dive into self-discovery, research, and new projects—including his attempt at launching a crypto coliving in Granada.
His biggest advice? If you're taking a sabbatical, take at least two years. One year isn’t enough to truly reset—you’ll spend half the time thinking about what’s next.
🏡 The Idea of a Crypto Coliving
Theo’s crypto coliving concept was a bold experiment—using blockchain for membership, governance, and payments, aiming to create a community-driven coliving where decisions were made collectively using quadratic voting. The project required €3 million in funding but ultimately didn't take off. However, the idea of crypto-backed, community-run colivings is still out there, waiting for the right moment.
🚽 Reinventing Toilets (Seriously!)
One of Theo’s unexpected deep dives during his sabbatical? Fixing the broken toilet system. From splash issues to toilet paper being the biggest scam of the century, he breaks down the 7 deadly sins of toilets and shares his vision for a modern, more efficient design—one that doesn’t require excessive water, eliminates stains, and finally replaces toilet paper with something better.
👉 Would you live in a crypto coliving? And are you ready for the future of toilets?
